Sunset from Oia and Fira
You will remember the sight for the rest of your life. It is so mesmerizing when the sun goes down the horizon across the Aegean Sea. Choose one of the locations. Both are good though. Then book a spot in the town or an exclusive table in one of the restaurants. If you pick Oia, do pay a visit to the shops for Atlantis Books or few gems, and don’t miss the iconic Painting Work Shop. It is run by a local artist, Dimitris Koliousis, who follow the religious themes for his paintings done on reclaimed wood.
The Atlantis
Santorini was considered to be the home of the legend of Atlantis. A volcanic eruption engulfed the central part of the Santorini Island around 2000 years ago. Regarded as the most significant eruptions in the world, it took place around 1600 BC. A large part of the island sank into the sea with a huge crater that made cliffs on Santorini. Archaeologists working on the place for the last five decades have been able to find a place Akrotiri. Visit the archaeological site to soak in some history.
Hike to the Santorini Volcano
Put on your walking shoes, take a local boat and move to the Nea Kameni Island. It is the heart of the volcano. The volcanic landscape is active, but ‘asleep’ at the moment. You can carry your swimming gear along. If you are lucky enough, your boatman will stop near the edges of the geothermal points of the islands beating the ocean below. The experience is worth. You get to witness the temperature variation.
Visit the Pyrgos Village
Santorini houses numerous breathtaking small places like the Pyrgos. The village is on top of a hill and presents so many breathtaking views. It is home to no more than 1000 residents who are warm, friendly people. There are picture-clicking opportunities in every nook and corner of the village.
Visit the Heart of Santorini
The trip would be incomplete without touching the topmost place of the island. A place worth visiting is Profitis Ilias. Located at the top of the mountain, you will witness monastic buildings and also enjoy the views all across the island from here. Also, you can put your hands on some locally produced items as well.
Explore the Beaches
The red beach is to the southwest corner of the Caldera. The hike to the place is beautiful and the cold water will welcome you. Black beach is another beautiful beach to look forward to. It is a 7 km long stretch of volcanic sand having bars and restaurants all along. Enjoy cocktails under an umbrella along with the view.
