Playa del Amor – The Hidden Beach (Marieta, Mexico)

Appropriately dubbed the Hidden Beach, this lush little cove in Marietta, Mexico is just that. Situated at the mouth of Banderas Bay, a gaping hole on the island makes way for a hidden beach that encapsulates visitors in a circular structure of sand, with the Pacific waters lapping at their feet.

Although many islands in the area are the result of volcanic operations, rumor has it that this perfectly round sandy tavern was the result of a man-made explosion. The beach isn’t visible to the naked eye, but can be accessed through a small, narrow tunnel via swimming or kayaking. And because the islands are uninhabited, rest assured you’ll have a peaceful day.

Papakolea Beach (Mountain View, Hawaii)

Like most things worth waiting for, Hawaii’s Papakolea Beach isn’t easy to get to, but will certainly result in excitement and enthusiasm once you’ve reached the destination. Located just about six miles from South Point on the Big Island, you’ll be happy you came once you grab a fistful of speckled green sand and take in the scenery: blue-green water, picturesque cliffs, and beautiful fauna.

The beach is the only green sand beach in the United States — the green color is the product of volcanic activity that pushed mineral olivine to the surface. To get here, you’ll have to hike and do some off-roading, but it’s possible.

Beach of the Cathedrals (Spain)

The Beach of the Cathedrals in Spain isn’t as much of a hidden spot as some of the others on the list, but it’s worth noting, as it disappears completely during the high tide. Located along Spain’s Galician Coast, it’s aptly named thanks to the large natural stone arches that jut out from the sea cliffs.

The entire coast along this beach is dotted with arches and caves, and if you go during the right time, you’ll have an incredible walk admiring the geological beauty. And it’s not just the water and “cathedrals” you’ll get to gape at: during low tide, visitors can also explore its cave, but be sure to be back by the main beach quickly, as the tide rolls in before you know it.

Navagio Beach, Greece

Navagio Beach rests quietly in the Greek island of Zakynthos, where it was once the site of a shipwreck in 1983. During that time, the ship ran ashore while on the run from authorities, and since then, people have referred to the glistening little cove as “Smuggler’s Notch.” The ship still sits buried in the sand against a backdrop of clear, bright blue waters. Frequently referred to as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, visitors come to this secluded spot both for its charm and to gawk at the site of the shipwreck.

Lord Howe Island, Australia

Lord Howe Island is a tiny island in Tasman Sea, chockful of subtropical forests and crystal-clear waters. The island is home to over 15 beaches, and some are more off-the-beaten path than others. Ned’s Beach is one of the most popular of the grouping, and hailed as one of the best beaches in the entire country. It attracts visitors largely due to its amazing marine life: the snorkeling here is unparalleled. You might be able to catch some clownfish, turtles, kingfish, and even small Galapagos sharks. Ned’s Beach also has a special Sanctuary Zone where the coral is particularly amazing, and visitors can hand feed fish. Visitation to the beach is capped per year, making it a must and keeping foot traffic to a minimum.
